Big RickThe Glock 19 is a classic. While this word is often associated with guns like the 1873 Colt revolver or the Colt 1911, the Glock 19 deserves to be mentioned alongside these iconic handguns.
The Glock 17 was a game changer. Rumors of a "plastic gun" preceded its arrival with the media spreading fears of undetectable guns meandering through metal detectors long before its arrival.
The Glock 17 took reliability and durability to new levels.
Enter the Glock 19. A downsized Glock 17 more suitable to concealed carry. Giving up only 2 rounds of capacity due to it shorter grip, it was still suitable for duty carry by law enforcement and others. With 15 rounds of 9mm the convenient sized Glock 19 still offered a lot of firepower.
Glock has earned a reputation for reliability over the years and it is well deserved. Their motto "Glock Perfection" might be a little bit of an overstatement but I have owned several Glocks and can report that many have never experienced a malfunction that was gun related. We can conveniently skip over errors by the shooter for the purposes of this (and every other) article.
A criticism of Glock that one often hears is that of the dot and tray sights. The factory sights are plastic and offers a sight picture that is often not one that a shooter new to Glock expects. It is very common for owners to upgrade their sights. My experience is that of needing to change the sights and adjust them a bit to bring the rounds to where I expect them to land on the target. I wouldnt consider this so much a criticism of Glock as just information that a new owner who really wants to shoot their new Glock a great deal and become proficient with it may want to budget $100 for some good sights. I like Trijicon and Ameriglo myself. Often if you buy the gun from a reputable dealer who offers at least basic support, they will perform the installation of the sights of your choice without charge.
The Glock is a great firearm for the sake of simplicity. There are not a lot of parts (33 generally). They are simple, durable, and hard to break. Even a novice would have a hard time damaging a Glock due to use, misuse, or even outright abuse. It is a great gun for those who think of a firearm as a tool and do not want to have to be overly concerned with routing cleaning, maintenance, etc.
While all rules of firearm safety should be obeyed while handling any gun, with a Glock, trigger discipline is supremely important. Do not put your finger in the trigger guard until you are on target and ready to fire. A Glock has 3 internal safeties, but no external safety. While it will not go off if you drop it, hit it, etc. the Glocks legendary reliability makes it practically certain that IF you pull that trigger, on purpose or by accident, the gun will fire. So be mindful and well disciplined and a Glock product has a great chance of providing you with a lifetime of faithful service.
I carried a Glock 19 as my concealed carry for years and even trained many many students with it. It never let me down. The Glock 19 is a solid choice.
